
Jim Johnson has over twenty-five years of administrative and teaching experience in vocational/technical education. Jim started his educational career in 1977 at Sparta, Wisconsin teaching high school vocational metals. After a short return to industry as a maintenance machinist in Denver, Colorado and Houston, Texas, he returned to vocational/technical education at Winona Technical Institute in 1981. He has remained in administration at the college over the last 25 years growing through the positions of Trade and Industry Coordinator, Adult Extension Director, Associate Director, Vice President/CEO, and his current position of President since 1995. Jim has evolved and grown with the college through three name changes (the most recent July '99), three College Presidents, 7 state chancellors, a consolidation with Red Wing Technical College, and the 1995 Minnesota experiment called “mega merger”, in which all two-year community colleges, technical colleges and universities were merged into one system of state governance.
Jim holds an Associate of Science degree from Rock Valley Community College, Rockford, Illinois. From the University of Wisconsin - Stout, Jim holds a bachelor's degree in Industrial Education and master's in Vocational Education. His post-master's work has been at Winona State University, Ed.S., Educational Administration program and doctoral studies at the University of Minnesota, in Vocational Administration.
Jim's leadership and regional community endeavors, past and present include: Bush Fellows Leadership Development Program, President of Winona Area Chamber of Commerce, President of Minnesota Technical College Vice President's Association, Executive Director of Minnesota Technical College Administrator's Association, commission member of Goodview/Winona Consolidation(state appointment), founding board member of Winona Quality Council, Board member of Winona Area Workforce Investment Board (WWIB), Red Wing 2020 board member, Leadership Red Wing graduate, Minnesota City Lions Club President, Red Wing Dawnbreakers Kiwanis board member, founding board member Southeast Minnesota Regional Training Consortium, board member of National Council of Occupational Education, and founding member and chair of Winona Area School to Work Council. Jim serves on the board of the 7 Rivers Consortium, a tri-state (Mn, Wis, & Ia) seeking to enhance and develop this economic region. Jim is also entering his second 4 year term on the Governor's Workforce Development Council.
