Tech Prep - Overview

What's Tech Prep?

Tech Prep, short for Technical Preparation, is a nationwide program that prepares 11th-12th graders for the good-paying technical jobs of the future by allowing them the opportunity to earn college credit.

Coursework is college-preparatory and designed to prepare students to continue in a related program of study at a two-year college. Technical instruction is integrated with academic coursework and sometimes worksite learning to prepare students for related post-secondary training that can lead to a diploma or an associate of applied science degree. But it benefits both students who choose to enter the work force immediately upon graduation as well as those students who choose to attend college.

What is the purpose of Tech Prep?

The purpose of Tech Prep is to offer high school students and other individuals in a technical field of study an opportunity to earn college credit toward a certificate, diploma or AAS degree at Southeast Technical College.

Students who complete course work through Tech Prep will be better prepared to:

Why a technical education?

Over 65% of today's jobs require a technical education. A technical education gives people the opportunity to learn and practice the skills needed to enter the workforce and be successful. It's what employers are looking for. They want employees who are already trained to do the job.

Subjects like English, math and science are applied, not just theory. They are used like they are used on the job, providing a solid understanding of the subject that prepares students for the workforce or college alike.

Why are advanced standing agreements important?

Advanced standing agreements are agreements made between the college and individual high schools that allow students to take high school courses that transfer to the college, which save time and money. In addition, they provide a smooth transition from high school into a college program without delays, duplication of courses, or loss of credit.

Advanced standing agreements can be used at various colleges throughout southern Minnesota. Southeast Technicalparticipates in numerous advanced standing agreements.

How does it work?

The high school office sends a list of names and addresses of students who have earned an Articulation Certificate to the Tech Prep Office at the college who then sends Articulation Certificates directly to students at home with a letter explaining their options.

Juniors and seniors receive Articulation Certificates when they earn no less than a B for the final grade. But to take advantage of advanced standing at the college, students MUST enroll at the higher education institution within 2 years of high school graduation and be able to demonstrate the specified skills listed on the back of the articulation certificate.
