As another academic year has now closed at Southeast Technical College in May a new and exciting renovation has begun on the Red Wing Campus. It is with great excitement that we are pleased to announce the first significant upgrade to the Red Wing campus since it was constructed in 1972. Over 38,000 square feet will be affected by the renovation which includes a new 1600 square foot entry addition. The project was made possible through a capital bonding award of approximately $5.1 million passed in the 2006 state legislative session.
Lund-Martin Construction, Inc. of Minneapolis was awarded the bid as general contractor for the project and began phase I of the project the week after graduation. Phase I will include significant HVAC improvements to the 35 year old heating and cooling systems along with renewal and expansion of classroom and lab space to accommodate growth in the colleges nationally acclaimed Musical instrument repair programs. Phase I is scheduled to be completed in time for the 2007 fall semester.
The following phases of construction will include renovation to the student commons, student services area, business office and bookstore, information technology, custom training and learning resource center. A new college entry addition will also be constructed in later phases replacing the current outdated and deteriorating college entrance. Other areas of the college will benefit indirectly from the project as the building is reorganized and right sized to meet its current and future needs. Completion of all phases of the project is scheduled for April 2008.
The current front entrance and front parking area of the college will be closed until the project is completed. The entryways off of the student parking lot on the east side of the building will be the temporary main entrance during the project. Signage directing students, staff, faculty, and the public to the temporary front entrance is currently being placed at all entrance locations.
If you haven’t been on campus for a while, here’s what’s going on:
Contractors remain on schedule with most of the electrical and mechanical work being completed. New duct work is going in above ceiling level in pods 3 and 4. Steel, wall studs are going up in the guitar and band areas. The brown, brick wall facing the commons area from the kitchen will be coming down any day. You may also have noticed the front doors are now locked. Contractors are starting to work between the two main office areas so building access is limited to the east side, loading dock area and pod 5, main doorway.
As of Tuesday, June 19 Student Services, Financial Aid and Registrar staff have relocated into
1-124. The rest of custom, IT, HR and nurses will move yet this week. We are still on track to vacate the student services/admin area by Wednesday, June 25.
