Students with Disabilities
Southeast Technical has a long-standing commitment to provide equal access for students with disabilities and works diligently to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act, as well as Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. The college policy is to provide accessible programs, services and activities for all students with documented disabilities.
Who is Eligible
An individual with a disability is defined as any person who (i) has a physical or mental impairment that limits one or more major life activity, (ii) has a record of such an impairment, or (iii) is regarded as having such impairment.
A reasonable accommodation is a modification or adjustment to a course, program, service, job, activity or facility that enables a qualified student with a documented disability to have an equal opportunity. Reasonable accommodations are provided to ensure access to all college courses, programs, services, jobs, activities, and facilities, including those that are off-site, such as field trips, internships, and fieldwork. An equal opportunity means an opportunity to obtain the same level of performance or to enjoy equal benefits and privileges as are available to a similarly situated student without a disability.
Reasonable accommodations depend upon the nature and degree of severity of the documented disability. While the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 requires that priority consideration be given to the specific methods requested by the student, it does not imply that a particular accommodation must be granted if it is deemed not reasonable and other suitable techniques are available. Accommodations are provided upon request and are dependent on the assessed needs of the student. It is the responsibility of students with disabilities to make their accommodation requests prior to the start of each semester of attendance.
Services for students with disabilities include but are not limited to the following:
- Support Services
Individual and career counseling, support groups, and assessment and referral services.
- Academic Assistance Services
Program advising, course selection, tutoring, testing assistance and modification, early registration information and assistance, early syllabus availability, course accommodations and/or modifications, notetakers, proofreaders, and course load adjustment.
- Advocacy Services
Assistance is available to students when working with faculty, administrators, intervention procedures, and grievance procedures.
Students requiring accommodations while attending Southeast Technical, should contact Student Services. Students will be asked to fill out a Student Accommodation Request (SAR) form. The college requests that students give a three weeks notice to allow time for any needed accommodations such as equipment, supplies or a sign language interpreter.
