Basic Job Overview: This position is full time hourly with starting pay based on experience. This person will help with regular daily school service and over the counter band instrument repairs alongside other technicians in the shop. All of our shops have personnel dedicated to helping with paperwork, computer entry and customer contact to one degree or another. This means the technicians are able to focus on repair. While we certainly have our very busy times of the year and have through the years developed a strong production ethic, all of our shops tend to be friendly and easy going to work in. It is also worth noting that with the large number of techs we have on staff, our personnel can take advantage of and thrive on their own strong abilities and traits.

Marshall Music is seeking a full time band instrument technician. We are one of the largest school service organizations in the country and have a rich history of long term employees. We are seeking primarily a woodwind technician, but are interested in hearing from brasswind technicians too. We would like someone with a minimum of a few years experience, but would be willing to look at any applications from individuals fresh out of school too. JOB SUMMARY: Repair percussion, reed, and wind instruments.

PRIMARY JOB FUNCTIONS: Employees may be assigned additional duties by management as required.
Job Responsibility 1: Repairs or replace musical instrument parts and components, such as pads, corks, strings, bridges, felts, and keys, using hand and power tools. Repairs cracks in wood or metal instruments, using pinning wire, lathes, fillers, clamps, dent rollers, or soldering irons and torches.
Job Responsibility 2: Reassembles instruments following repair, using hand tools and power tools and glue, hair, yarn, resin, or clamps, and lubricate instruments as necessary.
Job Responsibility 3: Disassembles instruments and parts for repair, cleaning and adjustment.
Job Responsibility 4: Polishes instruments, using rags and polishing compounds, buffing wheels, or burnishing tools and protect finish with lacquer. Compares instrument pitches with tuning tool pitches in order to tune instruments.
Job Responsibility 5: Inspects instruments to locate defects, and to determine their value or the level of restoration required. Plays instruments to evaluate their sound quality and to locate any defects.
Job Responsibility 6: Enters, maintains and tracks electronic instrument repair records database for shop.
Job Responsibility 7: Manipulates brass and nickel silver to remove dents using (in addition to dent rollers), mandrels, dent balls and their devices, hammers, mallets, and powerful magnetic force.
Job Responsibility 8: Monitors inventory and informs supervisor of needed stock.

Compares or inspects data, people, or things against a standard.


Follows instructions of supervisor.


Requires responsibility and opportunity for achieving moderate economies and/or preventing moderate losses through the management or handling of supplies of high value or moderate amounts of money.


Uses addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; may compute ratios, rates, and percentages.


Reads technical instructions, charts, and/or procedures manuals; composes routine reports and completes job forms; completes inventory supply forms; maintains instrument database repair records; speaks/writes compound sentences using standard grammar.


Performs semi-routine work involving set procedures and rules, but with frequent problems; requires normal attention with extended periods of concentration for accurate results or occasional exposure to unusual pressure.


Makes decisions with moderately serious impact - affects work unit and may affect other units or citizens.


Handles machines, tools, equipment, or work aids involving moderate latitude for judgment regarding attainment of standard or in selecting appropriate items.


Requires considerable responsibility for the safety and health of self and others and/or continuous enforcement of the laws and standards of public health and safety.

High School or GED.


Certification from musical instrument repair school required. Valid Tennessee Drivers’ License required.


Minimum of 2 years’ applicable repair experience. Proficient in FileMakerPro or equivalent database management.

Requires active hands-on work involving standing or walking for brief periods, constant manual effort, exerting up to 10-15 pounds of force on a regular basis, ability to lift 50 pounds, and considerable dexterity in operating hand tools and specialized equipment.


The position is exposed to no unusual environmental hazards.


The position requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing, speaking, and color perception. Position requires sense of musical pitch and tone and good tactile sense.
