Miscellaneous Information

Dear Red Wing Graduate, Congratulations – you are in the right place. Now it’s time to move forward and I hope to interest you in this opportunity. To start, we need an initial test period to make sure we’re all on the same page and have good chemistry. Eventually, once you settle in, you’ll bump up to $15 per hour to start, for an average of 35+ hours a week. The hours are flexible, you don’t punch a clock, and my main work goal is to hit our due dates – especially in the summer. I’ve been in Lafayette for almost 30 years – first as an employee and then shop manager for a band and orchestra retailer. At one point we had three locations, but the store eventually went out of business in 2003. At that time I was hired by the local school corporations and started my own shop. We do repair. No sales or rentals. There are 4,000 band students in Tippecanoe County – including city schools, county schools, area Faith and Catholic schools, and Purdue University. My relationships with these schools are contractual, by agreement via purchase order, and by annual budget. It’s stable and growing. Our clientele now includes professional players and collegiate faculty from Chicago to the Indianapolis Symphony, the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra, Jacob’s School of Music, and all the major colleges and universities in the region. We’ve also had instruments in from 4 different DCI Corps, Off Broadway Touring Musicians, Cruise Ship Musicians and Headliners from Purdue Convocations. Purdue University is creating a Staff Position for me later this year to oversee their more than 5 Million Dollars of Inventory. It’s part time, so I can split my hours between my responsibilities there and Brent’s Bench, Inc. That’s where you come in. You’ll answer the phone, wait on customers, and do some minor emergency repairs as well as see to the regular shelf while I’m not here. When I am here, I’ll be happy to continue your learning experience with the opportunity for repetition, explanation and constructive input.. You’ll need to do both brass and woodwinds eventually, but would be cool if you “like” brass at the beginning, especially low brass. June, July and August are something you need to experience to believe... Gene Beckwith told me, “If you’re any good, you’ll always be really busy in the summer.” I graduated from Red Wing in 1983. We were also lucky enough that year to have some education in percussion as well. I’ve increased my knowledge exponentially since then and will be happy to show you what I know. We must be doing something right to have helped area schools win several percussion awards in ISSMA competitive marching over the years. If your school experience is anything like mine was, you’ll wish you could stay another year and learn more. I’ve trained more than a dozen people so far, some were off the street and others were also Red Wing Graduates - one of whom went on to start and establish the repair shop for Pro Winds, and another who became a shop manager for a Brook Mays location in Dallas. At this point in my career, I also have an interest in finding someone to take over for me when I’m ready to hang up the apron. I always hope to find someone with an open mind, a willingness to learn, and a good work ethic. (And there is an inside joke about being an Eagle Scout) I also hope that by being as open and honest as possible in the job description – it will attract the people best suited for the position. Thanks for your time, Brent

Luthier Position 04.07.15

(Musical Instrument Repair Careers) Permanent link

Roland Huthmaker, Bowed String Instruments

We are presently taking applications for a luthier position in our violin shop starting the first week in June.  The position includes doing repairs for student instruments and school instruments, working with customers, helping with shop duties as needed and receiving advanced instruction in repairs and instrument identification.  Possible bow repairing and restoration work may become part of the job position.

We are looking for a luthier who wants a long-term position, who is committed to quality workmanship and who wants to be a member of our "tribe."

Huthmaker Violins is a family-owned shop with a 25 year history in Metropolitan Atlanta.  We are located in the northeast suburbs of Atlanta in an 1880 hotel which we purchased a year ago.  Quality is extremely important to us.  From our student instruments to artist-quality instruments, our personal demands are that we provide the best for our customers.

The position will be a two-month paid internship followed by a permanent job offering if the internship is successful.

If you are interested, please contact us by phone or email, followed by a resume (with at least two references).  We may visit Red Wing for personal interview or do one by SKYPE.

Luthier 02.06.15

(Musical Instrument Repair Careers) Permanent link

 Johnson String Instrument

My name is Emily, and I manage the Rental Repair Workshop at Johnson String Instrument in Boston.  I wanted to let you know that we have an opening in the shop, so if you have any students who might be interested, you might let them know!   I suspect you might be familiar with us, but it's a good entry-level job for a new luthier looking to get some experience.  We recently promoted one of our rental staff to our restoration shop, which is why we're hiring.

Please feel free to pass along my contact information; I'd be happy to answer any questions your students might have!

The first three months is considered a new employee's "trial period" (it's a paid trial period).  Then we evaluate at the end of the three months to determine if the employee is a good fit.  Coming right out of school, we start people at $14/hr, but if the employee shows tremendous improvement in the first three months we would certainly consider a raise at that time.

The job comes with a benefits package including health insurance through Blue Cross, dental insurance through Guardian, as well as a 401k with matching (after the first full year of employment), as well as paid vacation time (after the first full year of employment), and paid sick/personal time.  Employees also get a discount on most (all?) product at JSI - including instrument set up parts (our employees tend to make use of this!).

It is a Monday-Friday gig, 8 hours/day, though I'm flexible about what time employees come in.  We have a few people who come in early around 6:30, and some who start later around 9.   The shop is in Waltham MA.  It is a great crew of people - we currently have four full time luthiers, and are looking for a fifth.  The atmosphere is happy and upbeat, pretty relaxed, but boy do these guys work hard and get things done!

Of course I can't make any promises around this, but.... when our restoration shop (the fancy shop) is hiring, they first look to the rental shop to see if anyone is ready to move up.  We've promoted a handful of people this way since I've been managing the shop.  So there is room for growth here at JSI.

Thanks again for passing this along, I really appreciate it!  Truthfully, I've gotten into the habit of leaving my job post up on the JSI website, because we do tend to experience a bit of turnover.  So I'm always accepting resumes at this point.  If you happen to think of it, if any students ask, they can just check our website and get in touch!

 Acoustic Corner

Open immediately, a position repairing instruments at Acoustic Corner.  A small family owned music shop in Black Mountain, North Carolina.  Applicants should be ready to perform repairs on a variety of fretted instruments.  Looking for a graduate of at least the first year of the guitar program.  Applicants should also be willing to learn routine repairs on violin family instruments.

The job allows a flexible schedule from 30-35 hours per week, and pay starts at $13/hr, with raises expected after training.

My name is Matthew Hannafin, and I am a class of 2011 Red Wing student, and will be overlapping with the applicant to familiarize them with shop procedures and day to day operations.  There are brief moments where the job requires one to help in the show floor, which is something the team at Acoustic Corner will help to teach as well.

The shop website is www.acoustic-corner.com, and if interested please contact me at matthannafin@gmail.com, or call at (828) 275-6714.

There are many instruments that walk through the door at this shop for repairs.  In the three years I've been here, I've reset necks on vintage Martins, performed many refrets, and all around enjoyed having different things to work on each day.

Cheers!

~Matt Hannafin
