Luthier 08.31.16

(Musical Instrument Repair Careers) Permanent link

 Superior Violins

Job Opportunity

We are located in Grand Rapids, MI and currently have over 200 instruments that are either setup or semi-setup at our shop. I'm spending at least 2-3 hours per day with setups, and that doesn't include a lot of additional work that I could do with touchups, revitalizing instruments and more.

I'm looking for a skilled luthier that has the ability to handle stringed instruments of all shapes and sizes including setting up bridges, sound posts, touchups and more. I need someone that could help out with additional things such as setting up and taking pictures of trade-in instruments, which would be posted onto our website.

Whoever we hire would have a unique opportunity as I am a violin authority who has built a large following of people who would buy whatever instruments I recommend. I would be willing to pitch the sale of instruments from the hired luthier, so the job opportunity would come with the potential of the hired luthier making money from a worldwide audience. I'd be willing to help make this a significant income stream for the luthier, and I'd be happy to let them build instruments at my shop during down-time.

I currently have an email list of over 75,000 people and an significant influence in the violin world. What I recommend goes a long way with what sells--honestly sales come more from trust than directly through our website--through phone sales and social media. The luthier could begin to establish a reputation for their violins which would put them onto a new level regarding what they could demand in years to come.

We are also willing to guarantee part-time work--15 dollars per hour with a guarantee of 15 hours per week. The goal would be that this is just around half of what the luthier makes, and maybe even less than half if the luthier can build instruments of quality in a short amount of time. During the holiday sale season, we could easily reach 35 hours in a given week, but we would rather commit to a 15 hour minimum to start.

After one year, if the luthier has proven success in various areas and has helped grow our business (which has doubled in revenue every year), we would be happy to give the luthier a raise. We reward those that do well for us and with how many violins we are selling per year, it could easily become an opportunity where the luthier could become a "Senior Luthier" and they could eventually demand top dollar for their instruments.

We would be willing to use our current resources to create a website for the luthier, where they could start establishing their own authority in the violin making industry. We have many marketing tactics and methods that could be used for the luthier at no extra cost--ultimately helping them make more and more money with the sale of their instruments.

We would like to propose for whoever we hire to come in for a one month trial period to make sure things are a good fit. We hope that it would lead to a hire. Please contact Michael Sanchez with your interest in this position which would require a relocation to our area in Grand Rapids, MI. 616-299-9196

Thanks for your consideration!

The Music Store in St. George, Utah is currently seeking a full time repair technician. The Music Store is growing rapidly and expanding into new markets increasing the demands on the shop and creating our need for a new tech. Competitive wages and benefits package available and negotiable depending on experience. The Music Store is only 5 years old. We have a lot to learn and a long ways to go to be at our goals but that’s why we need good people on the team. Our computer system is Mac based and is one of the strongest POS systems on the market. It tracks all of our inventory by classification, is a powerful repair tracking tool and I have reporting that fits almost all of my desires.  As for St. George  there’s a lot more to say than there is about The Music Store. St. George is amazing. So many people who live here do so because they choose to instead of being somewhere because “that’s where the job is” or because they “grew up here.” We have an adult student who is a pharmacist; she and her husband moved here from Ireland after seeing St. George in a golfing magazine. Two people in my neighborhood work from home and live here because they can bike 360 days a year and do. St. George offers all the amenities you want from a city with a small town feel. It really is a special place. Take a look at the visitors web site and see for yourself.  Here are some links to look at: The Music Store www.themusic-store.com Our Facebook Page www.facebook.com/TheMusicStoreUT/ St. George Tourism info.  visitstgeorge.com To apply or if you have any questions just call or email owner Steve France at steve@themusic-store.com or 435-673-6000

Miscellaneous Information

We are considering employing a bassoon repairer for the summer. Do you have any students that would be interested in such a position? The work would be in our bassoon repair department. Most of the work would be of the nature of complete services and repad overhauls. This would be an excellent opportunity for a repair student to develop skills and experience working in a specialty area of band instrument repair. At this time, the position is only for the summer. The beginning and ending dates can be whatever meets our mutual needs, and hopefully would begin as soon as possible. There is no promise that employment would continue beyond this summer. However, it is unlikely that we would want to discard a good prospect for permanent employment. Miscellaneous Information

Vivace Music Center in central PA recently expanded from 1,200 sq ft to 7,100 sq ft. Our closest competitors are either an hour north or an hour south of us so we are quickly growing. We currently have an independent contractor come in once a week to pick up instruments and drop off repaired instruments. She is getting less and less reliable and repairs are taking far too long. Our store is growing and the number of repairs are growing, so we'd like to hire someone to work directly. We are looking for someone to repair woodwind/brass instruments as well as occasionally work on guitars. We'd like someone to fix customer-owned instruments that are brought in, clean/maintain our instruments on display, and repair our rent-to-own instruments. We'd like someone who can take charge of the repairs aspect of our business with minimal guidance. We are looking for someone to work full-time. Repairs may not be 40 hours a week, so in "down time" we'd like you to pick-up and deliver instruments from/to local schools and/or work at the sales counter. You will have use of a company vehicle for store-related errands. Starting wage is $15.00 an hour. You'll get a budget to outfit the repair room as you see fit (it's currently empty). There are additional opportunities to earn income (such as teaching an instrument) where you would set your own lesson rate. The cost of living in central PA is very low. There are numerous restaurants (locally-owned and chain), a new strip mall with Target, PetSmart, Staples, etc., an indoor mall, a Super Walmart, and several other locally-owned and chain stores in the area. Selinsgrove is home to Susquehanna University (which has a very good music program) and Bucknell University is about 15 minutes north. Selinsgrove is very centrally located between several major cities. Philadelphia is 2.5 hours away, Baltimore is 2.5 hours away, New York City is 3 hours away, Washington D.C. is 3 hours away, Pittsburgh is 3.5 hours away, and Boston is 6.5 hours away. There are lots of smaller towns where you could take fun day trips to such as: Gettysburg, Lancaster, & Bethlehem.
