Job Description:

 

The School of Music at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign seeks applicants for a Musical Instrument Specialist for University Bands.  The person in this position serves the Division of Bands as property manager with broad oversight of the inventory, care, repair, and use of instruments, uniforms, equipment, storage, and other items as assigned.  This position is responsible for the University Band van, building keys, lockers, and other University property in the Harding Band Building.  This position supervises a small number of hourly student workers, and is in charge of all logistics related to University Bands concert performances and events. The position assists School of Music personnel with tracking and inventory of Bands instruments and equipment; with strict adherence to UIUC Property Accounting policy and procedures.  The person in this position also monitors all rooms and security within the Harding Band Building, both interior and exterior, noting and reporting necessary repairs through proper channels as directed. This position requires occasional weekend and evening work in support of University Band events that occur on and off campus.  The incumbent may teach an instrument repair course if/when the need aligns with the academic goals of the School of Music.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

 

·         High School Diploma, GED or equivalent.

·         Five (5) years (60 months) professional experience in the maintenance and repair of musical instruments.

Note: Successful completion of formal training program such as those recognized by the National Association of Professional Band Instrument Repair Technicians (NAPBIRT) or a Registered Piano Technician as recognized by the Piano Technicians Guild (PTG) or closely related program(s) that include training/education in the repair and maintenance of musical instruments may be substituted for one year of the above experience.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

·         Bachelor’s Degree in music or a related field preferred.

·         Previous supervisory and/or administrative experience.

 

Personal Attributes Required:

 

·         Working knowledge of a variety of musical instruments and related equipment.

·         Skill in the operation and maintenance of hand and machine shop tools.

·         Mechanical skills.

·         Manual dexterity and ability with or without accommodation to move large equipment such as band instruments, pianos/keyboards, and other similar equipment.

·         Pitch discrimination.

·         Supervisory ability.

·         Ability to deal effectively with the public, faculty, staff, and students.

JOB SUMMARY: Repair percussion, reed, and wind instruments.

PRIMARY JOB FUNCTIONS: Employees may be assigned additional duties by management as required.
Job Responsibility 1: Repairs or replace musical instrument parts and components, such as pads, corks, strings, bridges, felts, and keys, using hand and power tools. Repairs cracks in wood or metal instruments, using pinning wire, lathes, fillers, clamps, dent rollers, or soldering irons and torches.
Job Responsibility 2: Reassembles instruments following repair, using hand tools and power tools and glue, hair, yarn, resin, or clamps, and lubricate instruments as necessary.
Job Responsibility 3: Disassembles instruments and parts for repair, cleaning and adjustment.
Job Responsibility 4: Polishes instruments, using rags and polishing compounds, buffing wheels, or burnishing tools and protect finish with lacquer. Compares instrument pitches with tuning tool pitches in order to tune instruments.
Job Responsibility 5: Inspects instruments to locate defects, and to determine their value or the level of restoration required. Plays instruments to evaluate their sound quality and to locate any defects.
Job Responsibility 6: Enters, maintains and tracks electronic instrument repair records database for shop.
Job Responsibility 7: Manipulates brass and nickel silver to remove dents using (in addition to dent rollers), mandrels, dent balls and their devices, hammers, mallets, and powerful magnetic force.
Job Responsibility 8: Monitors inventory and informs supervisor of needed stock.

Minimum of 2 years’ applicable repair experience. Proficient in FileMakerPro or equivalent database management.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Requires active hands-on work involving standing or walking for brief periods, constant manual effort, exerting up to 10-15 pounds of force on a regular basis, ability to lift 50 pounds, and considerable dexterity in operating hand tools and specialized equipment.
