 Applebaum Violin Shop

Job Opening in Violin Shop, Tacoma, Washington

I am looking for a full-time employee to do repair and restoration work on violins, violas, and cellos in a small, well-established shop. Our clientele ranges from students to professionals. The emphasis is on quality work. I am willing to consider both new school graduates and people with more experience. Salary will be appropriate to experience; and medical and dental insurance, paid vacation, and paid sick days will be provided. The current person in the job will be leaving to start his own shop after seven years here. The position will be open in earlly summer.

Tacoma is 40 minutes drive south of Seattle, on the shore of Puget Sound, and close to two mountain ranges. There is a lively cultural life here, as well as easy access to the excitements of Seattle. However, Tacoma is a much more affordable city than Seattle. Outdoor recreation of all kinds are abundantly available.

Here, we have or take care of the usual range of instruments, everything from rentals (although that is not the main focus) to old German, French, and Czech trade instruments, to better new Chinese, to fine American, to fine French (Gand, Bernardel, Blanchard, Collin-Mezin, Vuillaume, etc.),to good modern Italians (Antoniazzi, Messori, Mozzani, Fiorini), and the occasional old Italian. We do a lot of cello work, and always have at least one old cello under restoration (usually to sell in the 20k-40k range). We have a pretty good range of bows, too, topping out at Ouchard, Vuillaume, and the like.

You can see our website at www.applebaumviolin.com

The workshop is just me plus one other person, and a part-timer to take care of the office.  In such a small group, everyone has customer contact, and does a little of everything.

Please send a resume and cover letter to carl@applebaumviolin.com, or by mail to Carl Applebaum, Applebaum Violin Shop, 1948 Pacific Avenue, Tacoma WA 98402. You can call me, if you wish, at 253-272-4754.

Miscellaneous Information

I have a repair technician opening in my shop here at Swicegood Music in Lake Charles, Louisiana and I was wondering if you had any students looking for a job. I'm looking for your best (who doesn't have a job already lined up) to come work with me starting as soon as possible. Swicegood Music's repair department is a PC shop with many stable school accounts, steady customer work (98% student-line instruments) and a good-sized rental fleet. Our summers have been getting busier and busier since the Petro-Chemical industry is expanding down here, and there seems to be no shortage of work. I have a passion for this trade and everything about it, and I want to mentor someone who is equally passionate and ready to continue their repair journey. I'm a 2010 WITCC grad who studied under Mark Schmeddinghoff and Daryl Hickman, and I'm the WIT Advisory Committee Chairwoman. One of the main things I focus on every day is constant development and improvement of my techniques and over all standards, even though I work on mostly entry-level (and even some "junky") instruments. I want to share my space with someone who will understand that the repair industry is full of people who are excited to do what we do every day and that we need "new blood" to carry our trade through the future. Thank you for your help! Allison Scull
