Driver Education for Youth

WHEN SAFETY IS YOUR FIRST CONCERN!

The goal of the Driver Education for Youth Program offered by Minnesota State College - Southeast Technical (Southeast Technical) is to successfully provide new drivers with the skills, knowledge, motivation, and insight to become safe and responsible drivers.

Southeast Technical's Driver Education for Youth Program consists of the following:

• 30 hours classroom instruction
• 4 hours of simulation training on the Doron simulator
• 5 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction

Computer-Aided Simulation

Unlike many existing programs, Southeast Technical has added a new dimension to training—the DORON SIMULATOR. The benefit of computer-aided simulation training is that it safely provides each driver with the opportunity to:

• Measure reaction times
• Experience the effects of drugs and alcohol
• Drive in unforeseen weather and road conditions

Finally, this program engages local teachers and trained professionals in all aspects of training.

The classroom and simulator curriculum follows the training requirements for Drivers Training as published by the Department of Public Safety. Areas of instruction include:

• Your driving privileges and how to protect them
• Seat belts, airbags, ABS braking systems, and other safety equipment
• Automobile insurance
• The role of law enforcement
• Traffic signs, signals, and road markings
• Minnesota traffic laws
• Adjusting to driving conditions
• Vehicle safety
