Graduation & Commencement Services

Graduation and commencement are two separate events. Graduation is the process by which Southeast Technical officially confers a degree to a learner. Commencement, on the other hand, is the ceremony which publicly recognizes those learners who have graduated or will soon graduate.

Graduation

Once you are enrolled in the final course(s) required to complete your degree or certificate, you must apply for graduation. The graduation application form is available at all three campus reception areas. The completed form must be sent to the registrar's office 3 months before the end of the term for processing.

Commencement

The commencement ceremony is a celebration of your graduation. To participate in a commencement ceremony, you must have graduated or be certified for graduation. Participation in commencement does not imply or assure degree conferral. Degrees are conferred when all requirements have been met.

Southeast Technical holds two graduation ceremonies in May, one in Red Wing and one in Winona. Tickets are not needed. A reception with punch and cookies will be held for graduates, families and friends immediately following the ceremony. The ceremony runs approximately one hour and a half. All graduates and guests are expected to remain seated for the entire program. Local lodging information can be found at the via area convention and visitors bureau Web sites:

Red Wing Visitors and Convention Bureau: www.redwing.org
Visit Winona: www.visitwinona.com

A cap and gown are required. Student Senate at both campuses will be paying for the cost of the cap, gown and tassel. If you already have a black cap and gown, you will need to pick up a tassel only. You must wear a black cap and gown to participate in the ceremony. Pick up times are scheduled the last week of April on the Red Wing and Winona campuses. A limited supply of invitations will also be available at all three campus reception areas the last week of April.

Honor status is given to students graduating from a diploma, AAS or AS program who have completed a minimum of 25 resident credits including credits from the last term before graduation. Students with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 to 3.74 receive Honors designation. Students with a cumulative GPA of 3.75 to 4.00 receive High Honors designation. Final honor status is determined after final grades are received. Honor status will appear on the student transcript at the time of official graduation. Students who participate in the commencement ceremony and who meet the eligibility requirements will receive a gold honor cord from the Registrar’s Office after the cap and gown have been picked up.

You will not receive your actual certificate, diploma or degree at the commencement ceremony. A cover will be given to you to place your document in after you receive it in the mail. The document will be mailed approximately 6 – 8 weeks after the term ends, when grades are finalized and your graduation is confirmed from the Registrar’s Office.

If you need to change your graduation date to a later semester or have additional questions, please contact the Registrar’s Office at the campus you will be graduating from.
