PART 1.  POLICY

The College recognizes that students may acquire college-level knowledge and skills through learning experiences outside of formal education. In an effort to eliminate duplication of learner educational efforts, students may be awarded college credit through Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) external assessments, such as nationally recognized standardized exams and military training, as well as through internal assessments including course challenges, competency demonstrations, and portfolio reviews.

A. External CPL Assessments

The following nationally recognized examinations are eligible for college credit (see the Credit for prior learning website for minimum score requirements):

  • Advanced Placement (AP)
  • International Baccalaureate (IB)
  • College-Level Examination Program (CLEP)
  • DANTES Subject Standardized Tests (DSST)
  • Other nationally recognized standardized examinations approved by the College

Credit awarded through CPL external assessments:

  • Does not count toward residency credit requirements
  • Shall not be limited by a maximum number of credits awarded by the college or university

B. Internal CPL Assessments

Students may also pursue internal CPL assessments, including:

  • Credit by Exam
  • Prior Learning Portfolio
  • Individualized Subject-Area Assessment
  • Skill simulation or Demonstration
  • Interview based assessment

These assessments must be completed within the add/drop period of the course if the student is registered. Students are allowed one (1) attempt per CPL assessment. Credits earned through internal CPL assessments are considered residency credits. A per-credit fee applies.

Students should consult with department faculty to explore internal CPL options. Internal CPL assessment credits count toward residency credit requirements and cannot exceed two-thirds the total credit of the award.

C. Military Training and Service

In accordance with Minnesota Statute 197.775, Subdivision 2, students with qualifying military training or service will be awarded credit if the course or training meets American Council on Education (ACE) standards or the equivalent. Students will not be charged for analysis and awarding of credit for training delivered by the United States military.

D. Student Responsibility

To be eligible for credit through CPL assessments, students must:

  • Be admitted to or registered as an approved participant in an approved partnership at the college or university

Students are responsible for:

  • Seeking guidance on how CPL credits may apply toward degree requirements, including program-specific prerequisites, major/minor constraints, and MnTC criteria
  • Understanding the CPL process, expectations, assessment criteria, and any academic or financial aid implications
  • Choosing whether to submit documentation for all, some, or none of their CPL external assessments
  • Providing official documentation and/or supporting materials as required by college or university procedures
  • Adhering to all institutional CPL policies and procedures
