The CARES Act and our students

Updated May 19, 2020 - 2:30 pm

These are unprecedented and challenging times. We know you find yourselves handling issues you may have never imagined. We want to assure you that we are here to support you in your mission of education.

To this end, the federal government has provided additional resources to help you continue your education. The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act was signed into law to distribute roughly $14 billion in funds to institutions of higher education. These funds are to help college students whose lives have been interrupted, many of whom are facing financial challenges. The CARES Act requires institutions to provide emergency financial aid grants to students following Department of Education and Minnesota State guidance.

Minnesota State College Southeast, in adhering to the federal guidelines, has posted this PDF documenting specific actions we have taking in disbursing CARES Act funds. Please see this PDF to understand the methodology we have used to disburse these funds.

As of current guidance, we have been told that students not eligible to receive CARES funds include:

  • Students taking 100% of their classes online for spring semester 2020
  • Concurrent high school students
  • Postsecondary enrollment option students (PSEO)
  • Those being assessed senior citizen tuition rates
  • Those enrolled in non-credit courses
  • Those incarcerated
  • Students without social security numbers
  • DACA students
  • International students
  • Minnesota State employees who are receiving tuition benefits

We know this situation has affected all of our students. If you were not eligible to receive funding from the CARES Act, contact our Financial Aid Office about other forms of assistance that may be available to you. Contact Pam Zimmerman, Financial Aid Counselor (pzimmerman@southeastmn.edu, 507-453-2710).
