Key Responsibilities

  • Set up and maintain student-level orchestral string instruments, including violins, violas, cellos, and basses
  • Recondition company-owned orchestral string instruments to Schmitt Music quality standards
  • Perform basic repairs under the supervision and guidance of experienced luthiers
  • Assist with instrument preparation to ensure consistent playability, sound, and presentation for students, educators, and customers
  • Maintain accurate repair documentation, tagging, and tracking of instruments
  • Care for instruments, tools, parts, and shop resources with professionalism and accountability
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe bench and workshop environment
  • Participate in ongoing training to learn Schmitt Music setup, maintenance, and repair standards
  • Support communication and workflow between the violin shop, retail teams, service staff, and school music representatives
  • Identify opportunities to improve setup quality, repair flow, turnaround times, and consistency

What We're Looking For

  • Graduate of a recognized luthier training program preferred, such as Minnesota State College Southeast / Red Wing or similar
  • Prior experience in a violin shop, repair shop, woodworking environment, or fine craftsmanship setting preferred
  • Background in music or familiarity with orchestral string instruments preferred
  • Strong attention to detail and pride in craftsmanship
  • Eagerness to learn, receive feedback, and grow within the field of lutherie
  • Professional, collaborative, and customer-focused mindset
  • Ability to follow established standards, ask good questions, and apply feedback consistently
  • Strong organizational habits and ability to support seasonal repair and school-service demands

Physical & Work Environment Requirements

Job Description: Our Orchestral String Repair department is responsible for inspecting, repairing, and maintaining a wide variety of instruments, including all sizes of violins, violas, cellos and basses both from our stock as well as those owned by the schools and customers we serve. The ideal candidate will have experience working with both student and professional-level instruments and be committed to providing excellent workmanship and customer service. Additionally, less experienced luthiers are welcome to apply and grow on our team. Key Responsibilities:

  • Diagnose and repair issues with all orchestral instruments
  • Perform general maintenance, cleaning, and adjustments to ensure instruments are in optimal working condition

  • Accurately maintain records within the company’s computer system
  • Maintain a clean and organized workshop area
  • Communicate effectively with customers, ensuring they understand the repair process
  • Test instruments to ensure they are fully functional after repairs
  • Maintain inventory of repair parts and tools
  • Collaborate with store staff and leadership to support rental and sales operations
  • Be willing to work weekends and occasional outside events

Qualifications:
  • Prior experience preferred (formal training or apprenticeship preferred)
  • Strong knowledge of all orchestral string instruments

  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously

  • Responsible for rental instrument return cleanings, assembling information and items for the rental programs, and performing duties including flushing and cleaning of instruments.
  • Utilize Point of Sale (POS) for repair, inventory, and customer information, and accurately completing all repair tickets.
  • Fine attention to detail to track instrument parts, serial numbers, inventory, and accessories.
  • Cleaning, installing strings and finger tapes
  • Assemble rental programs. This involves picking instruments, label instruments, and completing agreements online.
  • Stock accessory bins for rental returns
  • Maintain safe, clean and efficient working conditions.

I'm looking for a woodwind person with some playing skills. If they have a good mechanical knack and the right personality, that's half the battle. Our shop is growing, and we're doing a lot of school work, but the pro work market keeps growing as well. So it's a nice mix. Central Ohio is booming too. Orchestral String Luthier and Sales

The Groth Music repair department seeks to hire an orchestral string luthier with the ability and willingness to also assist with sales. Full time is preferred, but part time may be an option for the right candidate. Luthiers of all levels are encouraged to apply.

Our repair shop processes a high volume of instrument repairs generated from walk-in traffic and from our School Services team, which makes weekly visits to local school districts. The shop works on customer-owned instruments as well as our rental fleet of quality instruments.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine maintenance tasks including tuning, adjusting bridges, and replacing strings. Specific tasks will depend on qualifications. We work on violins, violas, cellos, basses, and lever harps.
  • Diagnose instruments and give customers the options available for repair.
  • Assist customers on the sales floor with instruments and accessories.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Previous lutherie apprenticeship and/or schooling
  • Attention to detail, and the ability to manage time and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to communicate effectively with musicians and non-musicians to understand their needs
  • Basic computer skills
  • The ability to play an orchestral string instrument preferred

Compensation and Benefits
Compensation includes an hourly wage commensurate with experience (a bench test is required). Full-time employees receive company benefits including paid time off, company supported health insurance, and a retirement plan.
