Hazardous Materials Procedure
In the event of an environmental spill involving hazardous chemicals or other materials, follow these guidelines.
Determine the nature of the spill and begin appropriate notification.
Small containable spill, call:
Call Minnesota State College Southeast’s Maintenance Department (ext. 6360 or 651-764-1202)
Call 911 immediately for Police and/or Fire Department, if medical attention is necessary.
Large containable spill, call:
911 for emergency assistance
Southeast Security or Facilities Services personnel will be responsible for securing affected areas until arrival of Emergency Personnel.
Provide first aid to those injured
Remove the victims from the spill area to fresh air (if possible).
Do not endanger your own life by entering areas with toxic gases.
Evacuate the affected area of spill immediately. Use judgment depending on the nature and quantity of spilled material.
Do not allow anyone to enter the affected area.
Assist persons with disabilities in evacuation.
Assess nature of spill for area to be evacuated; i.e. room, floor, building.
Notify the Maintenance Department at 6360 for notification of Minnesota Duty Officer.
