Hazardous Materials Procedure

In the event of an environmental spill involving hazardous chemicals or other materials, follow these guidelines.

  • Determine the nature of the spill and begin appropriate notification.

    • Small containable spill, call:

      • Call Minnesota State College Southeast's Maintenance Department (ext. 2770)

      • Call 911 immediately for Police and/or Fire Department, if medical attention is necessary.

       

    • Large containable spill, call:

      • 911 for emergency assistance

      • Minnesota State College Southeast Security or Facilities Services personnel will be responsible for securing affected areas until arrival of Emergency Personnel.

       

     

  • Provide first aid to those injured

    • Remove the victims from the spill area to fresh air (if possible).

    • Do not endanger your own life by entering areas with toxic gases.

     

  • Evacuate the affected area of spill immediately. Use judgment depending on the nature and quantity of spilled material.

    • Do not allow anyone to enter the affected area.

    • Assist persons with disabilities in evacuation.

    • Assess nature of spill for area to be evacuated; i.e. room, floor, building.

     

  • Notify the Maintenance Department at 2770 for notification of Minnesota Duty Officer.
